The Mental Health Project Film

April 2009 - March 2012

Frank and Chloe are schizophrenic, Lou is bi-polar, and Jeremy is battling OCD.  All four are residents of Brookwood Asylum in Surrey.  When the asylum closes in 1994, under the Care in the Community legislation, all four are moved out into general society.  This series tells the story of what happens next.

Based on the acclaimed theatrical production of the same name, these three half-hour episodes examine mental health from all angles... What is happening inside our brains?  Why do so many bi-polar people commit suicide?  What is it like to experience psychosis?

This hypnotic story ranges from laugh out loud funny to frightening.  It effectively confronts the stigma faced by these often outcast members of our society.

Made in partnership with Woking MIND and Surrey History Centre, this series continues the Peer Productions tradition of bringing difficult subjects to young people in an honest, gripping, and entertaining way.

Teacher's notes are provided to enable structured classroom discussion after each episode.

"The story made me realise that mental health issues can be a small as well as a big experience.  It made me feel sorry for people with mental health issues because all they want is to be understood.  It made me laugh and cry at the same time." Year 9 student, Rosebery School, Surrey.

Thanks to generous funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund, this DVD is available FREE to state secondary schools in Surrey.  Please contact us to order your copy.
