13th September 2010

Peer Productions were excited to welcome Michael Attenborough to Woking Youth Arts Centre this week.  Michael, who is the Artistic Director of The Almeida Theatre in London and has nearly 40 years’ experience in the theatre including as Principal Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, saw a sample of the work undertaken by Peer Productions, and spent time with the company directors and a number of young people.  The young people are all graduates of Peer Productions’ one year Peer Education Through Theatre and Film programme, a full time volunteer course designed to provide young people with the skills they need to succeed in the performing arts sector.

Michael saw a short performance created by the young people, together with Co-Artistic Directors Nina Lemon and Jason Orbaum,  showcasing some of the touring productions

the company are best known for.  He then provided the young people with advice and discussed some of his work.  Katherine Morgan (22) who graduated from Peer Productions this year and is about to undertake further training at LAMDA said ‘It was wonderful to meet him.  He was so easy to talk to and told us he was impressed by what we had done.’

Dr Helen Bowcock, Chair of Peer Production's Advisory Group, said 'Michael was very interested to hear of such innovative work in Surrey, especially as The Almeida Theatre work very actively with schools, colleges and community organisations. He kindly offered to come and visit Peer Productions and of course we were delighted to accept.'
