Don't Give Up the Clay Job
Members of Peer Productions Youth Theatre have been messing about with clay as part of their preparations for their production this month.
The youngsters have been working with professional prop and mask maker Claire Barry, making their own masks for His Dark Materials at the Rhoda MacGaw Theatre in Woking.
Director Nina Lemon said there are more than 90 young people in the cast and crew, sixty of them masked characters, with countless special effects and a split level set. She said: "We thought it would be a good experience for the youth theatre members to learn how to make their own masks and they are enjoying it immensely."
Producer Jason Orbaum said His Dark Materials, based on a trilogy by Philip Pullman and adapted for the National Theatre, is a "magical work or parallel worlds, ghosts and daemons."
At the heart of it is an incredible human story about a girl called Lyra and her mysterious parentage. He said "The play works on two levels. For the young audience members it's a spectacular carnival of colour, music and magic. Older members of the audience will enjoy the challenging sub-text which has made the books so successful for readers of all ages."
