Fine Show From Young Actors

An exciting Journey into children's literature continued  when Peer Productions performed His Dark Materials Part Two at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre in Woking last week.

The youth theatre group has been busy touring schools with various productions and performed the first part of His Dark Materials in February.

Once again the large cast of children and young adults did not disappoint with their interpretation of Philip Pullman's trilogy.  Anyone who may have missed the first play was given a brief synopsis at the start of the show to enlighten them on the story of friends Lyra and Will.

Pullman's fantasy world introduces children and adults who have daemons who assist and protect them.

Actors who took the main roles in the previous show either took on different roles or assisted backstage this time, allowing all members to share the spotlight.

Lauren Edwards was a confident Lyra, with her daemon Pantalaimon (Lucy Courage) closely behind her as we followed her journey.  I enjoyed both of their performances as we watched Pantalaimon warn and guide Lyra along the way.

It was interesting to watch the change in Will (Luke Addison) from boy to young adult as he dealt with his emotions and his feelings for Lyra.

There were two characters that stole the show for me.  Sophia Cuell as Mrs Coulter, Lyra's mother, had the stage presence and demeanour required to play this evil role and the incessant cackles added to her cruel nature on stage.

Conor Runswick as Lord Roke was hilarious and is certainly a young actor with a huge future ahead of him while Anthony Stephen Springall, as musical director, should also be highly commended for his original score.  It was dramatic when the script demanded but emotional during the show's more poignant moments.

Everyone who took part in the presentation should be very prou of their effors in what is a very challenging piece of theatre.
