It's Good Bear News at the Rhoda

Armoured polar bears did battle on the streetsof Woking on Saturday before hitting the Rhoda McGaw Theatre in an ambitious new production.

The ursine warriors are just some of the fantastic characters in Philip Pullman's acclaimed trilogy His Dark Materials that exploded onto the stage yesterday.

The show features an army of young performers aged between eight and 23 from youth theatre group Peer Productions and follows Lyra Belacqua on a journey through a world of daemons, witches, parallel dimensions and said polar bears.

Director Nina Lemon said: "There is so much more to this than your average youth play.  There is something quite beautiful and spectacular and exciting about it.  With a production of this scale, the logistics are sometimes daunting.  We've got more than 90 young people in the cast and crew, 60 masked characters, countless special effects and a split-level set."

She added the street performances gave the cast a chance to spark some interest in the play among shoppers and show off the lavish costumes.
