March 07 The Homophobia Project Play

Homophobia is an issue facing many young people across the South East. Peer Productions believe that this problem must be tackled head on, and so have created ‘The Homophobia Project' which will be touring to schools across our region this summer.

Talented peer educators will tour local schools with a performance and accompanying workshop which will explore the social implications of homophobia, together with testimonies from young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people. To create such a piece has been a huge challenge to all the young people involved, who have had to thoroughly research the topic. The peer educators recently completed a four day intensive workshopping week with young LGBT people from Surrey. This involved them planning and delivering a series of workshops exploring how it feels to live as part of this minority group today. Peer educator Denis Sewell, 19 said "It was an amazing experience, to meet these young people and provide them with the tools to open up and create drama together to enable us to really understand what they have been through."

Their research also took them to the excellent LGBT History Month launch, organised by Schools Out, an organisation which provides both a formal and informal support network for all people who want to raise the issue of homophobia and heterosexism in education. Here they entered into lively debate with a variety of speakers from the educational establishment, as well as being furnished with resources and guidance from across the LGBT community. Sir Ian McKellen attended the event, and spent time with the young people, discussing their project. Peer educator Chloe Wigmore, 18 said "The conference was fantastic – so lively and vibrant and full of hope. It really made me see just what can be achieved, plus meeting Sir Ian was inspirational!"

The Homophobia Project is available free to almost every school in Surrey, and those on the Surrey border, due to a full-fee subsidy being provided by the borough Youth Opportunities Fund committees. There is also free training provided to the teachers of each school which receives the production.
