March 08 The Homophobia Project Film
Imagine a world where everyone is assumed to be Gay or Lesbian. All you friends are Gay or Lesbian. All children are born through artificial insemination. All other ways are seen as dirty or wrong. If children do something that is seen to be weak, embarrassing or foolish at school that get called “Hetro”. Things, however, are slowly getting better. Recently Hetro couples have bee given the same civil rights as Gay or Lesbian couples. Imagine what it would be like to live in this world.
Peer Productions worked with young people who are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender or who have been questioning their sexuality, to devise the innovative theatre performance that toured schools earlier this year. The performances were designed to support schools PSHE Sex and Relationships work.
Now thanks to Mediabox, Peer Productions are in production of the film version of “The Homophobia Project”. All stories in the film are based on real experiences that were told to the actors while working on the stage show.
Felicity Murdock 19, is co-producing the project along with Denis Sewell 20, both of which took key performances in the original tour. “To challenge the prejudices on a topic that so many people still see as a taboo, it’s overwhelming to have such a positive impact to the quality of young people’s lives.” said Felicity. “It’s been hard work to transfer the stage show to film, but the final cut should be amazing. I’m so proud to have been given this opportunity” commented Denis.
Nina Lemon, the co-director at Peer Productions and writer to the original script says, “The backing and support we’ve received from Mediabox has been extraordinary for this project. We are incredibly grateful.”
Peer Productions is a theatre training company based in Knaphill. As well as the full time course they run a youth theatre every Sunday starting at 2pm for early stages, and 4-7pm for older stages. Please see our website for more details.
