March 08 The Teenage Pregnancy Project
Throughout the country, teenage pregnancy has been increasing at alarming rates over the recent years. However, like most "controversial" topics, there are always several sides to the story that need to be addressed.
Peer Productions has joined together with The Local Network Fund and Surrey Community Action, to devise a piece of theatre which will be toured round both Surrey and Kent schools, in the Spring and Summer terms of 2008.
A team of talented actors and peer educators will work with local groups of young parents to discover the real reasons why so many young people today become parents, in the hope of raising awareness and breaking the stigmas surrounding this issue. Several young mothers will join the actors on tour to local schools, to give a first hand account of their experiences to fellow teens.
Graham Philips of Surrey Community Action, says, 'The Local Network Fund administered by Graham Phillips at Surrey Community Action allocated £362,000 to 69 Surrey Community Groups in the period April-October 2007. This compared with £311,000 in the whole of the financial year 2006-7. Graham has visited several of these groups recently and found it very gratifying to see the benefits that the children and young people are receiving from grants provided by the Local Network Fund.'
The Teenage Pregnancy Tour is available free to almost every school in Surrey, and those on the Surrey border, due to a full-fee subsidy being provided by the borough Youth Opportunities Fund committees. There is also free training provided to the teachers of each school which receives the production.
