Mask-making Workshops
Young actors from Peer Productions have been busy making masks for His Dark Materials, to be presented at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre, Woking from February 21 to 24 at 7.30pm.
They have been spending their weekends with professional prop and mask maker Claire Barr for the production, which is based on the Philip Pullman trilogy.
Producer Jason Orbaum said: "It is a magical work of parallel worlds, ghosts and daemons. At the heart of the story is a girl named Lyra and her mysterious parentage. The play works on two levels. For younger audience members it is a spectacular carnival of colour, music and magic while older audiences will enjoy the challenging subtext that has made the books so successful."
The masks have been built on clay moulds and each masked character also has a custom-made headpiece on which the mask is mounted. The final process is to give the masks shadows and tones using paint.
Director Nina Lemon said: "With a production of this scale the logistics are sometimes daunting. We have over 90 young people in the cast and crew, 60 masked characters and numerous special effects. We thought it would be a good experience for the youth theatre members to learn how to make their own masks and they enjoyed it immensely."
