Peer Productions and Sir Ian McKellen

Actors from Woking's Peer Productions Youth Theatre met with Sir Ian McKellen last month during a workshop about homophobia

Members of the group, who recently performed Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, Part One in Woking, will be touring schools this summer with The Homophobia Project - a workshop to raise awareness of the subject.

Peer educators involved in the project have recently completed a four-day intensive workshop with young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people.

Denis Sewell, aged 19, said: "The workshops were an amazing experience.  It was great to meet these young people and provide them with the tools to open up and create drama together to really understand what they have been through."

As part of their research, the group attended the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History Month launch last month.  The launch was organised by Schools Out, which provides a support network for people wanting to raise the issue of homophobia and hetrosexism in education.

The peer educators engaged in lively debate with a variety of speakers and met Sir Ian McKellen.

Chloe Wigmore, 18, peer educator, said: "The conference was vibrant and full of hope.  it really made me see just what can be achieved and meeting Sir Ian was inspirational."

The Homophobia Project is free for most schools in Surrey and some on the Surrey border, due to a full fee subsidy, provided by the Youth Opportunities Fund.

The project is supported by grants from the Surrey Inclusion Panel, Local Network Fund amd Surrey Community Action.
