The Risk Taking Project

June 2010 - September 2011

The Risk Taking Project

With underage conception, alcohol/substance abuse and antisocial behaviour ongoing issues for older teens it is time to explore where these behaviours begin. What happens at key stage three to turn sensible and friendly children into risk taking uncommunicative youths? How can we, as artists and educators, empower year 7 and 8 students equipping them with the skills and emotional intelligence to make positive choices and build supportive, respectful and healthy relationships?

Peer Productions young actors worked 8 pupils running drama workshops designed to research which risk taking behaviours are most prevalent and relevant. From this research the actors worked with Peer Productions' directors to devise four playlets. These are 60 minute interactive play/workshops which will be designed to be performed in classroom settings.  The actors then return to the schools and perform the four playlets in rotation. We are delivering this project in the summer 2010 term.

Abby's Story - Internet Safety

Dan's story - Knife Crime

But Rachel's aspirations make her a target for bullies.  Join Rachel as she struggles to cope with pressure from school, friends, family and herself.   A brand new, classroom based, interactive musical exploring the danger of taking risks and the joys of young people's success.

Jonny's Story - Unhealthy relationships

Jonny is a typical lad.  He enjoys playing footie, hanging out with his mates and pursuing 'hot' girls.   When his little sister Emily becomes the target for unwanted sexual attention, Jonny is forced to confront his own views of women and girls.  For girls, this play offers the opportunity to reflect upon and explore the gender pressures all young people experience.  For young men, they will be empowered to make decisions which support and enable their female peers.  They will learn that the responsibility for preventing rape and sexual assault can lie in all their hands.
