The Mental Health Project

April 2009 - July 2009

Throughout history, those experiencing mental health issues, ranging
from problems often seen as extreme and frightening (schizophrenia,
mania, self-harm and suicidal behaviours, for example) to those
perceived as more 'normal' and commonplace (depression, anxiety, eating disorders, addictions, etc) have been stigmatised and misunderstood .  This still happens today.  Peer Productions attempted to unravel the misconceptions and confront the prejudices faced by those with mental health issues through this brave new work which used the history of Brookwood Asylum as the starting point for a whistle-stop tour of the history of mental health, its treatment, and how the expediencies of the past have become the stigmas of today.

Thanks to generous funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund this project is now being adapted into a DVD resource for schools which will be available from March 2011.  Please contact us for more information.
