Volunteers' Case Studies

Anthony Springall

Anthony (18) completed his Certificate in Peer Education Through Theatre and Film with Peer Productions in July 08.

He decided to join the course to gain more experience for drama school after completing a BTEC Performing Arts Course.  As  a keen actor, musician and composer he wanted a chance to put his skills into action.

During his year with Peer Productions he learned acting for stage and screen and had the opportunity to tour two touring productions across the south east.  "I now really know what touring entails," says Anthony, "hard work, early starts and plenty of laughs.  More importantly it has given me the opportunity to really hone my performance over seventy tour dates learning how to keep things fresh and alive."

Anthony also learned how to operate sound kit for film making and acted as principle sound engineer for Peer Productions Feature Film The Homophobia Project (Link).

During the year he also had the opportunity to run workshops with different community groups including teenagers with learning disabilities and older people from The Vyne Community Centre.  He also worked as Musical Director for Peer Productions' youth theatre production of Oklahoma! .

For his Arts Award Gold Leadership project Anthony wrote his first full length musical Young at War (link to young at War Page) which premiered at The Rhoda McGaw Theatre in May 2008.

With support from Peer Productions Anthony auditioned for drama school and is now training at East15 Drama School

Anthony is currently working on a new musical with Peer Productions' Co-Artistic Director Jason Orbaum and talented newcomer Daizie Inglis. A thoroughly modern romance, "Facebook: The Musical", takes the audience on a journey through the lives of five separate individuals, all of whom find companionship, heartache, betrayal and love, through the blue and white windows of the worlds most popular social networking website: Facebook. Michelle Carter

Michelle (18) also completed her certificate in Peer Education Through Theatre and Film in July 08.  Michelle first worked with Peer Productions on an outreach project and decided to audition for the full time course.  Michelle admits that she was terrified at the prospect at first.  Unlike many other PP volunteers Michelle had little experience of drama and theatre and lacked confidence.  However, she worked hard on her audition and was delighted to be offered a place.

During the year Michelle's confidence grew and she refined her skill set particularly enjoying learning new stage make up techniques.   Although Michelle does not plan to pursue a career in the performing arts she is proud of what she has achieved and knows that, whatever she does next, she will attack it with renewed confidence and rigour.  Michelle is currently undertaking a number of projects including assisting with setting up an Arts Award project group for young people in her area.
