'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and 'The Grimm Fairy Tales' - Double Bill

May 2008 - May 2008

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Shakespeare's usual comic themes of high-born dukes and princesses falling in love with the wrong people are all present and correct in this, one of his most famous plays.  This new adaptation was created especially for the group of young actors who performed it.  Aged 8 to 12 years old, they were hard a work rehearsing the play for many weeks and, under the watchful eye of director and writer Chris Bryant, the audience we deilighted by the fruits of their labours.

The Grimm Fairy Tales

Inspired by some of the vast collection of tales written by the Brothers Grimm, these young actors aged 12 to 18 created new short pieces of theatre.  Four pieces were directed by older members of the youth theatre, under the watchful eye of Peer Productions' Co-Artisitc Director Jason Orbaum.

Each piece was, as you would expect, different - reflecting the individual eccentricities and character traits of its director's unique voice.  These new directors had no more than a few hours to work with a group of their peers from a single copy of the story.  They were expected to maintain discipline, time-manage their rehearsals, decide casting, projections, props, and, in some cases, music.  These thought-provoking stories explored the rich folklore style and wove together in an exciting tapestry, showcasing this talented young cast's ability and versitility.
